Abbott hosts novel markers workshop at Focus 2009
Abbott Diagnostics is hosting a workshop as part of the scientific programme at Focus 2009 (18-21 May, Liverpool). The session; ‘Advancing Patient Management with Novel Diagnostic Markers’ (Tuesday 19 May, 10.30-12.30) will discuss how innovative new markers can impact on unmet clinical needs. A prime example is neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) for assessing patients at risk of acute kidney injury. The workshop will also review the opportunities and hurdles presented by implementation of novel markers in the UK healthcare system.
Advancing Patient Management with Novel Diagnostic Markers
- Novel diagnostic markers – from then to now
Frank Quinn PhD, Director Global Scientific Affairs, Abbott Diagnostics
- Urinary NGAL and its role in the management of acute kidney injury
Patrick Murray MD, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, UCD School of Medicine &
Medical Science, Consultant in Nephrology & Clinical Pharmacology, Medical Director, UCD-Mater Clinical Research Centre
- Challenges, evidence and funding of new approaches in the UK healthcare system – a clinical and economic overview

Abbott’s commitment to scientific advancement is driving the development of a number of new novel markers including uNGAL, ProGRP (lung cancer differentiation) and HE4 (ovarian cancer). Focus delegates can find out more about the full range by visiting the ‘scientific corner’ on the Abbott’s stand (stand number 1).
